Breed Selection Wizard

Our breed wizard will help you to identify which of the many recognised UK pedigree breeds best match your individual needs and family situation, the wizard covers all breeds currently recognised by the UK Kennel club.

Finding the correct breed is nearly always a compromise so be as open as you can in your selections, for instance if you want a small to medium sized dog select tick both the 'small' and 'medium' boxes for your search - tick as many boxes as you want in the search form, the more open you are able to make your search the more results you'll receive.

Below the form itself we have added a few notes about the various categories, we'd recommend that you read these before searching as they provide important information regarding the criteria used for the searches.

Please choose the size of dog you would prefer Small Medium Large Extra Large
Please choose the level of exercise you would prefer Low Medium High
Please choose the level of grooming you would prefer Low Medium High
Please choose required level of compatibility with children Low Medium High
Please choose required level of compatibility with other animals Low Medium High

Breed Size - Size is given as an overall combination of height and weight, there will always be some overlap so, for example, if you don't find the ideal breed under 'medium' sized try 'small' or 'large' as there will be some just either side of the 'medium' classification which might be ideal.

Exercise - Very few dogs will turn down exercise if offered to them, this category is based on the minimum exercise requirement for a particular breed to keep them both physically fit and mentally stimulated.

Grooming - This rating is based on the recommended grooming schedules for the breed. It is a combination of the overall time required per week and the likelihood of having to employ professional grooming help.

Children - An overall recommendation on how suitable the breed is to live with children. It should be noted that 'Medium' is a normal recommendation and any dog rated 'Medium' has a normal balanced temperament and should be fine with children. 'High' is only used where the breed is renowned for their relationships with children, 'Low' applies to dogs which may be aggressive or may be very delicate and be at risk of being hurt by children.

Other Animals - This is based on the breeds relationships with other dogs and household pets, and how they behave with animals met outside of the home. This is not an absolute, all dogs vary in temperament and training can make a huge difference however it is a useful guide.
