Physical Appearance
The Akita is the largest of the Japanese spitz breeds and is strong and muscular with a flat, heavy head and strong, short muzzle. Slightly longer than they are tall they have a broad, deep chest and level back, the head is broad and shaped like a blunt triangle. Their double coat has a harsh waterproof outer coat over a thick soft undercoat. Colouring can include any colour and markings provided they are brilliant and clear. The Akita has cat like webbed feet which make it an excellent swimmer.
Breed Origins
The Akita was developed on the island of Honshu in the Akita region of Japan where it has remained in it's present form for centuries. Today, the Akita has been acclaimed the national dog of Japan and is designated a 'Natural Monument'. Over the centuries the Akita has turned it's hand to many tasks including Imperial guard dog, fighting dog, deer and bear hunter, sled puller and more recently police, army and guard work.
Temperament
The Akita is very intelligent, loyal to his family and has well developed guarding and protective instincts making him an excellent guard dog. They can, and do, exhibit aggressive tendencies towards other animals, especially dogs of the same sex. Associated strongly with children in their native Japan they love and are fiercely protective of their families children however they do not suffer teasing and may bite if provoked. It is important that play with children is supervised and that the children understand how to treat the dog with respect.
Day To Day
The Akita needs moderate exercise to stay in shape both physically and mentally. They should generally not be allowed off of the lead in a public place due to the possibility of them attacking other animals, especially same sex dogs. The Akitas stiff, short haired coat needs regular grooming with a firm bristled brush, they also shed heavily twice a year.
Potential Health Problems
Generally quite robust Akitas are prone to skin problems, especially if grooming is not carried out properly. Also, like most large dogs, they can suffer from hip dysplasia and may also have problems with their knees.
